Hello, my name is Mathilde

And welcome to my blog!
I am a marine biologist, naturalist, a guide, and an all-around nature lover with a passion for marine animals, with a focus on whales, dolphins, and porpoises. I currently work as a whale watch guide in Iceland, and I have worked on (expedition) cruise ships. I love to share my passion with guests and show them the beauty of the marine environment! On this blog, I would like to share this passion with everyone.

A very hungry humpback whale!
Earlier this week, this humpback whale was very hungry indeed. We were even able to predict where this whale would come up next! It kept moving from a patch of feeding birds, mostly kria (arctic terns). With every group of birds, it would come lunging up from the depths with a mouth full of fish!

Happy world orca day!
For the longest of times, this species kept eluding me with only a few distant sightings. This year, everything changed once I started working for Láki tours, and now I simply miss seeing them. We haven't seen any orcas since the 28th of June. The best months to see orcas are the months of March, April, and May. So the orca season here in Snæfellsness has definitely ended. I still have many good memories and photos from seeing them in the spring!
Like this sighting with some juveniles swimming close to the boat in perfect calm sea conditions close to the coast, which provided the perfect lighting for taking photos! Even whilst they are swimming underwater!

The Blue Whale, the largest animal on the planet!😍

Today was one of those days when you simply know you won't forget.
It was a windy day, and we knew from the beginning it was going to be difficult to find any whales. However, nature wouldn't be nature, if every now and then it surprises you and proves you wrong!

There it was, out of the blue (not sorry), a blue whale! With its blue/grey mottled body and absolutely tiny dorsal fin!
We, the crew, went absolutely crazy. Seeing a blue whale is always special, seeing that there aren't that many of them, but in our fjord, it's really really rare to see this species.
It really was a beautifully amazing encounter, and it showed us once again the surprising beauty of the ocean and Mother Earth!
And then, against all odds, we found the blue whale again on the afternoon trip!
In all honesty, I am still flabbergasted and can't stop smiling.
More photos to come, but it's definitely difficult to capture the enormity and the majesticness of these animals. But what a day!

Lately, we have mostly been seeing minke whales on the whale watching trips. The orca season is definitely over, but that doesn't mean that the encounters are any less impressive! Take a mirror calm sea and throw in some minke and puffins, and you have an absolutely brilliant trip!

Minke whales are amongst the smallest baleen whales species, with a max length of 10m. They mostly feed on small schooling fish. Iceland is one of the feeding grounds for this, sometimes, shy species of whale.

Yesterday was absolutely fintastic with our first long-finned pilot whales of the season!😍
I absolutely love pilot whales, with their strong family bonds and their cute faces! And look at the juvenile!😍 so adorable!
Can't wait to see some more of this beautiful species of cetacean!
I love that I can spend oceans day out at see looking for whales!
